Southern Kiwi - Small Group Tour

From the secluded beaches in Abel Tasman National Park, to the thermal mineral pools in Hanmer Springs, and adrenaline capital Queenstown, this south island adventure has it all. Adventure activities are aplenty throughout the trip, with accommodation and some activities included (see below); our tours are hassle-free, authentic experiences for those short on time. 


Itinerary

Day 1 : CHRISTCHURCH ARRIVAL
Welcome to Christchurch - the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand. Your accommodation for this evening is included and will be staying at Hotel Give, located at 12 Hereford Street, Christchurch Central. You'll be able to check into your accommodation from 2pm onwards. This evening at 7pm, meet your Kiwi Experience Driver Guide and the rest of your tour companions at a local bar for a couple of drinks (included).

Day 2 : CHRISTCHURCH TO KAIKOURA
Departing Christchurch bright and early, we'll venture up the east coast and stop off at Tawanui Farm where you'll get to experience life on a 330 hectare sheep and beef farm. Explore the farm, see sheep dogs working and get to meet and hand feed the animals while learning about farming systems and how they look after their environment. Afterwards, we'll continue to Kaikoura in time for you to check out what it's most famous for – its whale watching or swimming with the dolphins (optional paid activities). Spend the evening chilling on the beach or sampling some of the best seafood New Zealand offers for your dinner. In fact, the name Kaikoura means to eat crayfish (“kai” meaning to eat, “koura” meaning crayfish).

Day 3 : KAIKOURA TO ABEL TASMAN
We head north and take in the last of the dramatic Kaikoura coastline. It’s a spectacular drive and we stop for a close look at the seals that lay about on the rocks. Arriving into the top of the South Island we’ll journey through the dreamy Marlborough region, home to more vineyards than your eyes can see. We'll stop for some wine and gin tasting (or two…) along the way (included). Next is Tasman Bay home to the city of Nelson and our destination Abel Tasman National Park - a great spot to begin an adventure (on foot, by kayak or by water taxi).

Day 4 : ABEL TASMAN (FREE DAY)
Beautiful Abel Tasman National Park is famous for its lush forest framing golden sand beaches and fur seals playing in crystal clear waters. To make the most of your free day, we have a range of activities for you to choose from, so you can experience Abel Tasman the way you want to. Options include Hiking the Coastal track, Kayaking, Sailing or catching a Water Taxi into the heart of the National Park, your Driver Guide will help you plan your perfect day.

Day 5 : ABEL TASMAN TO HANMER SPRINGS
This morning we stop at the iconic Nelson Lakes, so you can get your legendary wharf jumping shot before continuing onto Hanmer Springs - best known for its natural hot pools and stunning landscapes. The surrounding mountains are home to walking trails, the Heritage Forest (with a winding trail to a lookout point), and Waiau Gorge with whitewater rapids.

Day 6 : HANMER SPRINGS
The resort town of Hanmer Springs is the perfect destination for adventure, relaxation and indulgence. Surrounded by dramatic mountains and towering forests, this charming town has a main street filled with boutique shops, cafes and eateries. Adventure activities will immerse you in the wild beauty of Hanmer. Go forest hiking, mountain biking, horse trekking, bungy jumping, jet boating or, in winter, hit the slopes and go skiing. Today you have an entry ticket to the iconic Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa where you can soak in the 22 outdoor thermal pools, complete with four hydroslides and the New Zealand’s largest aquatic thrill ride, Conical Thrill.

Day 7 : HANMER SPRINGS TO CHRISTCHURCH
A trip to the South Island would only be complete with a trip to Piopiotahi, Milford Sound. As we venture from Queenstown bright and early, we make time to stop for breakfast and coffee in the quaint town of Te Anau before continuing the breathtaking drive towards Milford Sound with scheduled photo stops along the way. Milford South is nestled within Fiordland National Park, known for its pristine wildlife, which marvels at any time of year and in any weather; Milford Sound is rich in geological formations, captivating waterfalls and, unsurprisingly, one of the most amazing scenic day trips to do in New Zealand. Enjoy a two-hour (Included) scenic boat cruise through the inky blackwater; keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, fur seals, and an abundance of birdlife; if you’re really lucky, you’ll spot the endangered Fiordland Crested Penguin.

Day 8 : CHRISTCHURCH FREE DAY
Today you have a full day to explore Christchurch City. This afternoon, meet your Kiwi Experience Driver Guide and the rest of your tour companions for a Christchurch Street Art tour (included), a journey of street art, murals and graffiti art of all sizes, explaining the history of urban art, and the city's emergence as an urban art destination.

Day 9 : CHRISTCHURCH TO FRANZ JOSEF
Today we travel from coast to coast right over the Southern Alps passing through the Arthur’s Pass National Park, a landscape of 2 halves. Ascending the eastern side, we’ll venture through shingle-filled riverbeds and vast swaths of beech forest, over deeply gorged rivers to dense rainforest on the western side. Along this road, we will stop off at the Devil’s Punch Bowl and the breath-taking Castle Hill (included).

Day 10 : FRANZ JOSEF
Incredible Franz Josef sits in the world heritage area, the combination of alpine scenery and west coast rainforest makes for an epic setting for your free day. You can experience a Heli-Hike on the glacier or you can explore this lush corner of New Zealand (for free) on foot; hitting up the many walking trails in the area.

Day 11 : FRANZ JOSEF TO LAKE HAWEA
In the morning we head to Lake Matheson where you can catch the perfect mirror reflection of Mt Cook and the Southern Alps. Afterwards, we then cruise up the last stretch of Highway 6, stopping at popular scenic spots along the way, and onwards to Lake Hawea.

Day 12 : LAKE HAWEA TO QUEENSTOWN VIA WANAKA
Today we head to Queenstown; known as the adrenaline capital of New Zealand. There is so much to see and do here for everyone, you will not be dissapointed. But before we get to Queenstown, we'll first stop in Wanaka; a resort town set on the southern end of its namesake lake with views of snowcapped mountains. It's the gateway to the Southern Alps' Mount Aspiring National Park, a wilderness of glaciers, beech forests and alpine lakes.

Day 13 : QUEENSTOWN
Queenstown has something for everyone; here, you can seek adrenaline-fueled adventures or enjoy a more leisurely exploration of the natural playground. Each season offers its own unique vibe, and most activities can be accessed all year round. If you’re looking for adrenaline, bungy jumping, jetboating, white water rafting and sky diving are all available. If a more relaxed pace is calling, hire a bike, take a stroll, enjoy a boat cruise, relax at a spa, or enjoy one of the many vineyards in the area.

Day 14 : MILFORD SOUND DAY TOUR

Day 15 : QUEENSTOWN TO CHRISTCHURCH
We drive on through the stunning Lindis Pass and into the magnificent Mackenzie Country, home to Lake Tekapo. Here we will visit the charming stone Church of the Good Shepherd (included), sat next to the breathtakingly blue waters of the lake framed with colourful lupins. Afterwards we head to Christchurch for one last hurrah before the tour ends.

Pickups / Departures

Day one of the tour includes accommodation at Hotel Give (12 Hereford Street, Christchurch). Check in here from 2pm onwards. The tour finishes in Christchurch at approximately 5 pm.
