Thailand does something very few countries manage: it's genuinely good at everything. The beaches are actually that good. The food is actually that good. Bangkok is actually that chaotic and brilliant. And the price of doing all of it is so low it almost feels wrong.

Why Thailand is the classic starting point

A huge chunk of first-time backpackers land in Bangkok and it immediately makes sense. It's a city that rewards curiosity. Street food stalls running 24 hours. Temples like Wat Pho and Wat Arun sitting a few minutes from rooftop bars. The BTS skytrain taking you across the city for 60 baht. It's overwhelming in a way that's actually enjoyable, which is a rare thing to pull off.

From Bangkok you go north or south. North means Chiang Mai: a completely different Thailand. Cooler temperatures, a slower pace, night bazaars, and ethical elephant sanctuaries where you can spend a day with elephants in a way that actually respects the animals (this matters, do your research). Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest peak, is a day trip away.

The islands

Head south and you hit the Gulf of Thailand on one side, the Andaman Sea on the other. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao are the classic trio on the Gulf side. Koh Tao is one of the cheapest places in the world to get your PADI open water diving certification. Koh Phangan hosts the Full Moon Party every month on Haad Rin Beach, which is exactly what it sounds like and something you should do at least once.

On the Andaman side you've got Phuket (bigger, more developed, still worth it), Koh Lanta (quieter, more relaxed), and the Phi Phi Islands, which are genuinely as beautiful as they look in the photos. Krabi is the base for rock climbing and island hopping through some genuinely spectacular karst limestone scenery.

Thailand tours and packages

We can put together a Thailand tour that hits what you actually want to see, whether that's a Bangkok-focused city break, a south island run, or a full north-to-south itinerary with everything in between. Thailand also connects easily to the rest of South East Asia. It's a natural entry or exit point for overland trips into Vietnam and Cambodia, and flights to Bali are short and usually cheap.
