Rainbow Beach sits between Noosa and K'gari on a stretch of coast that doesn't get nearly enough attention. It's a small town, genuinely pretty, and the closest mainland departure point to Fraser Island. Most people stop here because of K'gari. They end up staying longer because Rainbow Beach itself is actually excellent.
The coloured sand cliffs that give the town its name are real and they're right there. Striped layers of ochre, red, yellow, and white running down to the beach. The Carlo Sand Blow is a massive natural sand dune that shifts with the wind and gives you views across the coast and out toward Fraser. It's worth the walk up even if you're only here for one night.
K'gari departures from Rainbow Beach
The barge crossing from Inskip Point (just south of Rainbow Beach) to K'gari takes about 10 minutes and runs continuously through the day. It's the shortest crossing to the island and makes Rainbow Beach the most convenient base for self-drive 4x4 tours. We offer K'gari camping packages including 4x4 hire, camping permits, and equipment departing from here.
What else Rainbow Beach has going on
Skydiving here is one of the better options on the coast: you're jumping over the coloured cliffs with K'gari visible across the strait on the way down. Kayaking with dolphins runs out of the bay when conditions are right. Fishing, four-wheel driving on the beach, and general beach time round out a town that works as more than just a transit stop.
Rainbow Beach as a base
Centrally located hostel accommodation makes Rainbow Beach an easy overnight before or after a K'gari tour. It's also genuinely a nice place to decompress mid-trip if you've been moving fast. Quieter than Noosa, less built up than Airlie, and with enough to do that you won't be bored.
Browse tours and activities above, check out the K'gari Fraser Coast hub for overnight and multi-day island tours, or head to Noosa if you're heading south. All of this fits into an East Coast package if you're doing the full route.
