It's built for people who want to meet other travellers and move through the South Island without overthinking it.
InterCity is point-to-point scheduled coach travel. More flexibility on routing, you can book legs individually or as a pass, and it works well if you've got a specific itinerary in mind rather than wanting to run a loop. Good option if you're combining bus travel with bits of self-drive or if you want to move between cities on your own schedule.

What the South Island pass covers
Depending on the pass, you're looking at routes through Christchurch, Kaikōura, Nelson, Abel Tasman, the West Coast, Franz Josef Glacier, Wānaka, Queenstown, and down into Fiordland for Milford Sound.
That's essentially the full South Island circuit. Most people run it over two to three weeks, though you can move faster or slower depending on your timeline.
