Brisbane has a man-made beach lagoon in the middle of the city, the world's largest koala sanctuary 12km from the CBD, a bridge you can climb, and a river that actually rewards you for getting on it. SO. Things to do in Brisbane? Yeah, there are a few.
It's also the kind of city where the free stuff is genuinely good. South Bank Parklands, the Botanic Gardens, GOMA's permanent collection. You could spend a full day not spending a dollar and not feel short-changed. (The paid stuff is worth it too, but it's nice to have options.)
The Brisbane Activities Actually Worth Your Time
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary has been running since 1927 and is the world's largest koala sanctuary. You can hold a koala (it's a Queensland thing, legal here, not everywhere), hand-feed kangaroos, and see platypus doing their weird platypus thing. It's about 12km from the CBD and worth every minute of the trip out.
The Story Bridge Adventure Climb is 1,072 steps and a view of the city that earns it. The sunrise and sunset climbs are the ones to book if you have flexibility. The bridge has been there since 1940 and the climb operation is very dialled in at this point.
Brisbane River kayaking is one of those activities that sounds a bit touristy until you're actually on the water and realise it's the best view of the city you've had. Tours run 2-3 hours, cover the city reach and the Botanic Gardens, and don't require any experience. Good shout for a morning.
GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art) is free for the permanent collection and is legitimately one of the better modern art museums in Australia. Worth an afternoon, especially if there's a temporary exhibition on.
Get Out of the City While You're Here
Brisbane's good. What's around it is also good, and the access is easy enough that you'd be leaving things on the table if you stayed purely in the city. Moreton and Stradbroke Islands are the pick for a day trip with actual substance. Sand dunes, snorkelling the Tangalooma wrecks, wildlife, no permanent roads. It's 75 minutes by ferry and feels nothing like the city you left.
The Gold Coast is an hour south for theme parks, surf lessons, and 57km of beach. Noosa is a couple of hours north if you're starting to drift up toward K'gari Fraser Coast. And if you're planning the full East Coast, the East Coast bus passes pick up from Brisbane and handle the logistics of getting between all of it.
