The most flexible way to travel the North Island. A North Island hop on hop off bus pass puts you on a route between all the major stops, but you decide how long you stay at each one. Love a place? Stay a few extra days. Ready to move? Book your seat on the next bus and go.
The route runs Auckland to Wellington and hits everything worth stopping for on the way. Auckland to the Bay of Islands. Hot Water Beach on the Coromandel, where you dig your own thermal pool in the sand at low tide (yes, really). Waitomo Caves and its glowworm grottos. Rotorua for geothermal weirdness and Māori culture. Taupo for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and skydiving over a lake larger than Singapore. Then into Wellington for the ferry south.
You're not locked into a schedule. But you're also not figuring out transport from scratch every time you want to move, which is SO much better than it sounds at 8am with a bag to carry.
Kiwi Experience vs InterCity
Kiwi Experience is the classic backpacker bus. Social, high energy, drivers who double as local guides and know exactly which waterfall is worth the detour. The North Island pass runs Auckland to Wellington with a minimum of 6 days and up to a year to complete it. You can also do the Northern Round Up, which starts and finishes in Auckland and loops through the top of the island. Good if you're flying in and out of the same city.
InterCity is more point-to-point. You pick your specific stops, book seats between them, and build the route yourself. Less party bus energy, more flexibility to go exactly where you want without committing to the full circuit. Better if you're mixing bus travel with other transport or have specific places in mind.

Hobbiton on a bus pass, okay?
Worth flagging: Hobbiton in Matamata isn't always a direct bus stop, but it's easy to reach as a day trip from Auckland or Rotorua, or as a dedicated stop if you organise it in advance. It's one of the most popular experiences in New Zealand and books out regularly. Sort it before you leave, not when you're already there.
Taking it south
A North Island pass connects naturally to a South Island hop-on hop-off bus pass via the Wellington to Picton ferry. Most people do both. Browse the full North Island range, check New Zealand deals for anything running, or talk to our team to get sorted.
