Starting your east coast trip from Cairns means you get the tropical end of the route first and work your way south through some of Australia's best stops. It's a solid way to do it, and the route down to Brisbane, Sydney, or Melbourne covers pretty much everything the east coast is known for.

Before you head south, Cairns itself is worth a few days. The Great Barrier Reef is right on your doorstep, the Daintree Rainforest is one of the oldest rainforests on the planet, and Cairns tours and activities could easily fill a week on their own. Most people don't give Cairns enough time. Don't be most people.

What Does the Cairns to Sydney (or Brisbane or Melbourne) Route Look Like?

Heading south from Cairns, Mission Beach is your first stop and one of the closest access points to the outer Great Barrier Reef if you haven't already ticked that off. Then it's on to Magnetic Island, where the pace drops right off and the wildlife turns up uninvited in the best possible way.

Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays come next, and they're the stop most people are counting down to from day one. Sailing between 74 islands, Whitehaven Beach, sunsets on the water. It earns the hype. After the Whitsundays, 1770 and Agnes Water are two small coastal towns worth slowing down for before you hit K'gari (Fraser Island), the world's largest sand island and genuinely one of the most unique places in Australia.

From K'gari you'll head through Noosa, one of those places that sounds like a quick stop and turns into an extra two days every time, before rolling into Brisbane. If you're finishing in Brisbane, you're done. If you're continuing south, the Gold Coast and Byron Bay are next, with surf camps, beach time, and the kind of town energy that makes it hard to leave. From Byron it's on to Sydney, or if you're going the whole way, Melbourne.
