South East Asia is the one. The place that gets into people's heads before they've even booked, and refuses to leave after they've come home. It's loud, cheap, beautiful in ways that feel almost unfair, and genuinely addictive once you've had a taste of it.
What makes South East Asia so good for backpackers
Your money goes far here. Further than almost anywhere else on earth. A good meal is $3. A beach bungalow is $15. A bus across the border into the next country is barely a blip. That's before you factor in that the actual stuff to do, see, eat, and experience is some of the best the world has to offer.
The infrastructure for independent travel is well worn. Hostels are everywhere. Border crossings are straightforward. Other travellers are around constantly, which makes it easy to meet people even if you're going solo. And the sheer variety across the region means you can go from ancient temple complexes to world-class surf breaks to neon-lit night markets in the space of a week.
The destinations
Bali earns the hype. Temples, rice terraces, surf, and a food scene that keeps levelling up. It works as a standalone week or as the start of something longer.
Thailand is the one that does everything well. Bangkok delivers every time. The north has mountains, trekking, and some of the best food in the country. The south has the islands, the parties, and the kind of beaches that make you seriously reconsider your life plans.
Vietnam and Cambodia together make one of the great overland journeys. Halong Bay, Hoi An, Saigon, and then across to Angkor Wat. Each one delivers on its own. As a combined trip they're genuinely hard to beat.
The Philippines is still underrated relative to what it actually offers. Over 7,600 islands. Some of the best diving in the world around Palawan and Tubbataha. And a warmth from locals that you don't forget quickly.
Sri Lanka is the one people always say they wish they'd done sooner. Surf towns on the south coast, tea country in the highlands, ancient ruins, and elephants in the wild. It's a small country that packs a serious punch.
Multi-country trips through South East Asia
A lot of the best South East Asia trips combine two or three countries. Thailand into Cambodia into Vietnam is the classic overland route and it works for a reason. Bali plus the Philippines is a solid island-heavy option if you want to keep things tropical. Sri Lanka pairs well as a standalone or as a bookend to a longer trip.
