74 islands. One of the most photographed beaches on Earth. And a sailing culture that makes it basically impossible to leave without a story. The Whitsundays are, genuinely, as good as everyone says they are. (We know everyone says that. We're saying it anyway because it's true.)

Airlie Beach is the town you base yourself in: small, lively, a little chaotic in the best way, and the departure point for every sailing tour in the region. Everyone there is either just back from the water or about to get on it. The nightlife is also legitimately good, if that's relevant to your planning.

Whether you've got a day or a week, we've got something that fits. Here's what's on offer.

Whitehaven Beach: yes, it actually looks like that

Whitehaven is 7km of 98% pure silica sand on Whitsunday Island. It doesn't compact underfoot, it squeaks when you walk on it, and it stays cool even in direct sun. The Hill Inlet lookout at the northern end shows the swirling pattern of sand and turquoise water that ends up in every Whitsundays photo ever taken. It looks exactly like that in real life, which still surprises people who've seen the photos a hundred times.

Every sailing tour stops here. Non-negotiable.

The sailing tours (this is what you're really here for)

The Whitsundays is sailing territory. Has been for decades. The range of boats is broad: budget party boats that keep things social, smaller group catamarans that feel almost like a private charter, and everything in between. We work with some of the most popular boats in the region including Habibi, Tongarra, Wings, and Atlantic Clipper.

Multi-night trips get you to anchorages and snorkel spots that day trips simply can't reach. Two to three nights is the sweet spot. Browse our Whitsundays sailing tours and find your boat.

Short on time? Day trips actually slap

Not everyone has 3 days to spend on the water and that's fine. A good Whitsunday day trip still gets you to Whitehaven, Hill Inlet, and a snorkel stop. It's a long day but a full one. The reef doesn't care what you paid to get there.

Airlie Beach has more going on than you'd think

Aerial reef flights, ocean kayaking through the islands, snorkel tours, a free public lagoon that's genuinely a great swim. Airlie punches above its size. Browse our Airlie Beach activities for the full list.

When to go

June to September is peak: dry, sunny, ideal sailing conditions. Shoulder season either side has fewer crowds and slightly lower prices with similar weather. Stinger season runs roughly November to May, so wear a stinger suit in the water during those months. Tours provide them, so don't stress.

The Whitsundays slots perfectly into an East Coast trip between Cairns and Brisbane. Our East Coast packages are worth looking at before you book anything individually. Or just talk to our team and we'll sort it.
