Alice Springs has a reputation for being the place you stop on the way to Uluru. That reputation is selling it short. Alice Springs tours and activities cover gorges, thermal pools, ancient ranges, dot painting workshops, camel rides at sunrise, and stargazing experiences under some of the clearest skies on Earth. Give it more than a night and it earns it.
The West MacDonnell Ranges stretch 160km west of Alice like a crumpled red spine. Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, Ellery Creek Big Hole, Ormiston Gorge. Swimming holes so cold they take your breath away, surrounded by rock formations that are genuinely billions of years old. Most tourists never bother finding them. Their loss.
To the east, the Larapinta Trail runs 231km through some of the most ancient landscape on the continent. You don't have to do the whole thing. But even a day section will reset whatever's going on in your head.
Alice Springs tours and activities worth your time
Based in Alice for a few days? Fill them well. 4WD day trips into the ranges, Aboriginal cultural tours, wildlife experiences at the Desert Park, and a camel ride at dawn that sounds cheesy until you're actually on a camel watching the light change over the desert (do it, you'll tell everyone about it). Earth Sanctuary runs stargazing tours that are legitimately one of the best things you can do in the Red Centre at night.
Alice is also the obvious base for anyone heading out to Uluru and the wider Red Centre. Uluru is 450km south, Kings Canyon is about 300km southwest, and most multi-day tours depart from here.
Ready to keep moving? Head south on an Alice Springs to Adelaide tour through Coober Pedy and the Flinders Ranges, or north on an Alice Springs to Darwin tour through Katherine Gorge and Kakadu. Coming from the south? The Adelaide to Uluru and beyond route ends in Alice. Coming from the west? Perth to Darwin tours pass through the Red Centre too.
