The Blue Mountains are 90 minutes from Sydney and feel like a completely different planet. Deep sandstone gorges, eucalyptus forest as far as you can see, cliff edges that drop away into nothing, and a blue haze over the whole thing from the eucalyptus oil in the air that is actually why they're called the Blue Mountains. (The real thing is better than the explanation, by the way.)

It's one of the best day trips from any city in Australia, full stop. The scale of it recalibrates something in your brain that city stuff just doesn't touch. You show up, look out over the Jamison Valley, and go very quiet for a minute. That's normal. It happens to everyone.

What Blue Mountains Tours Actually Cover

The Three Sisters at Echo Point are the postcard image and they deliver in person. Three sandstone rock formations rising out of the valley, best at sunset when the light goes warm on the rock. The lookout is free, the view is absurd, and the photo you'll take will not do it justice but you'll take it anyway.

Scenic World has four ways to experience the mountains from one location: the Scenic Railway (the world's steepest passenger railway at a 52 degree incline), the Scenic Cableway, the Scenic Skyway over the gorge, and the Scenic Walkway through the rainforest at the bottom. You can do all four on one pass. The railway descent is genuinely dramatic and worth doing for the experience of it.

Bushwalking is the other side of the Blue Mountains that day tours get into properly. The Grand Canyon Track (not the American one, the Blue Mountains one, which is arguably better for a day walk), the National Pass, and the Federal Pass are all solid options depending on fitness level and how much time you have. Tours handle the navigation so you're not spending your day squinting at a trail map.

Katoomba and Leura are the two main villages in the mountains and both are worth walking around. Katoomba has the art deco Carrington Hotel, good cafes, and a slightly faded grandeur that's very charming. Leura is smaller, prettier, and has the kind of main street with independent bookshops and good food that makes you want to move there immediately.

Day Trip or Overnight?

Day trips from Sydney work well and cover the highlights comfortably. An overnight stay lets you do the sunset at Echo Point, wake up in the mountains, and do a proper full-day walk without rushing back for a train. If you've got the time, one night in Katoomba is a really good addition to a Sydney trip.

Pair it with the Sydney city activities for a full few days, or add the Hunter Valley for a second day trip in a completely different direction. Back to the Sydney & Surrounds hub for the full picture.
