8 Day Pilbara Tag-Along 4WD Tour

Details

Over 8 days, we’ll take you from the edge of the Gibson Desert, through waterholes and rivers and find our way to some of the most spectacular coastline you’ll find anywhere.

The Pilbara is the heart of the North West, and is just as diverse as it is unique, extending all the way from the Great Sandy Desert to Eighty Mile Beach. Over the course of a 4WD tour, the variety of scenery and landscapes will take your breath away. Far from just being the powerhouse of Australia’s economy, the Pilbara might actually be the most diverse region in Western Australia. We certainly think it’s the most underrated. Once we’ve done our job as tour guide, we think you’ll agree.

Rough As Guts is the leading provider of small group, outback 4WD tours in Western Australia.

There is no more immersive way to travel through the spectacular landscapes this country has to offer, than to drive through it yourself. With the help of expert guides, you'll have a safety-net, while being able to take charge of your own trip.

From the Talawana Track, we head North into Karlamilyi (Rudall River) National Park and typically make our camp in a beautiful glade of gum trees set against the back drop of red sand dunes.

Day 4 : Desert Queen Baths
We’ll visit numerous freshwater swimming locations including a camp at the stunningly picturesque Desert Queen Baths. Eventually, we leave the park and head to Carawine Gorge. Carawine is a beautiful and vast freshwater gorge on the Oakover River and an excellent spot for a swim.

Day 5 : Rest day at Carawine Gorge
For a well-deserved rest day, we stay at Carawine Gorge which is the perfect backdrop for a day of relaxation without having to pack up camp in the morning.

Day 6 : Desert Oasis
Leaving Carawine Gorge, we have a shorter day of driving, but will see some of the most interesting scenery Western Australia has to offer. Our camp is an area known to locals, but not somewhere we want to broadcast to everyone on the internet. You’ll just have to trust us, that this is one of the nicest spots that can be found this side of Neptune.
Meals :None

Day 7 : Hot shower in Nullagine
We travel towards Nullagine, with a few more stops to enjoy some spring-fed year-round water sources that belong on the front cover of a travel magazine. Camping in Nullagine, we have a chance to have a hot shower before heading to one of Australia’s classic country pubs for a good meal.
Meals :None

Day 8 : Marble Bar - Australia's Hottest Town and a Historical Hotspot
We travel from Nullagine to Marble Bar and see some of the local sights. This is a shorter day, so that we have time to get to Port Hedland or Newman.
Meals :None

Pickups / Departures

The Pilbara 8 day tour starts at Kumarina Roadhouse, approximately 200km south of Newman. It finishes in Marble Bar, which provides guests with the option to drive to Port Hedland or back towards Newman via Nullagine. From Port Hedland the Great Northern Highway as well as the North West Coastal Highway are both accessible, so you can visit coastal destinations -such as Karratha, Exmouth, Carnarvon, Shark Bay etc – or inland destinations such as Karijini, Tom Price, Newman or the Gascoyne Region.

Extras

Fuel is not included in the price. With so much variance between models of car and age/condition, fuel consumption can vary significantly between tour participants, and we feel it would be unfair to factor this into the price where someone with a fuel efficient car would have to pay the same amount.

Refuelling locations are very remote and consequently the price of fuel can be very expensive (upwards of $3/L).
