Day 1: Queenstown – Christchurch
Today we head over the Lindis Pass through the beautiful Mackenzie Country and past picturesque Lake Pukaki. Leaving Queenstown we make our way through a landscape made famous in the 'Lord of the Rings' films. Afterwards, we will continue on to Christchurch, giving you time to explore parts of the South Island’s largest city.
Day 2: Christchurch - Greymouth
After leaving Christchurch, the train travels through the fertile Canterbury Plains past the Waimakariri River along the Main South Line, to Rolleston. It then turns onto the Midland Line, which passes through the Southern Alps past the spectacular Waimakariri River gorge, via the Otira Tunnel and terminates in Greymouth, on the West Coast. The TranzAlpine is one of the world's great train journeys covering 223 kilometres (139 miles) one-way, taking just under 5 hours.
Day 3: Greymouth – Franz Josef
This day we’ll be our way to our next stop in the quaint little town of Franz Josef, home to the mighty Franz Josef Glacier. Enjoy a free day to get out and experience the Franz Josef Glacier, an iconic highlight of the West Coast. The most popular trip is the heli-hike onto the glacier which is a fully guided walking tour on the ice. This activity also includes entry to the hot pools afterwards. There are also other options to explore the glacier like visiting the glacial terminal face or doing one of the many hikes in the region.
Day 4: Franz Josef - Queenstown
Unfortunately, we’ll be leaving the West Coast behind. Then, we’ll travel inland through the mountainous Haast Pass and Makarora towards Queenstown. The Haast pass is one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand. We’ll be driving from rainforests to mountains, through beech forest and past great lakes. Then we make our way to Queenstown, known in New Zealand as the ‘Adventure Capital of the World’. Besides, it also is the home of bungy jumping. We recommend staying in Queenstown for a couple of days because there are lots of activities to do. From bungy jumping to skydiving to just an amazing night out, Queenstown can offer it all.
